Building on the success of the South East Asia Bicentenary Reception in Singapore earlier this year, we were delighted to continue the celebrations in Malaysia. On October 18th, we gathered over 150 esteemed guests, alumni, and students for a memorable evening at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur, honouring The University of Manchester’s remarkable 200-year legacy!
It was an honour to begin our night with an inspiring speech by Professor Stephen Flint, Associate Vice President – Internationalisation, and a thoughtful address by our Guest of Honour, Mr. Tom Shepherd, Acting Deputy British High Commissioner.
A special thank you to Ms. Joanne Rodrigues, Group Chief Financial Officer of Affin Bank and Eur Ing. Ts. Sukor Zainal, Executive Director of EFTECH Energy Solutions for sharing with us their heartfelt alumni stories. Their experiences, both personal and professional, were a testament to the lasting impact of their time at The University of Manchester.
We were also incredibly privileged to have Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat deliver the closing remarks. His presence as a celebrated figure in our alumni community made the evening all the more special. Among the distinguished alumni were Tan Sri Dato’ Hanafiah Hussain, Malaysia’s first Malay chartered accountant; Dato’ Ong Eng Bin, former CEO of OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad and the list goes on.
We are truly grateful to everyone who made this Malaysia Bicentenary Reception a spectacular night filled with excitement, meaningful connections, and a true sense of community! A heartfelt appreciation to Tze Chin Tang and Owen Jones for impeccable handling of their emcee responsibilities, and to Professor David Polya, Associate Dean for Internationalisation and Professor of Environmental Geochemistry, Mr. Richard Cotton, Director of International Development & Mr. Richard Screaton, Deputy Director of Alumni Engagement for their tremendous support and for being in Kuala Lumpur. Special thanks also goes to Markus Karlsson-Jones and Georgia Davies for their invaluable time and contributions.
