Redefining Success: Alumni Stories Unfold, Part 6 of 6 – Ms Wendy Leong

The Manchester Global MBA programme has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey as the Founder and CEO of Mobiva and Veriva Systems. As an entrepreneur deeply involved in international trade, the insights and knowledge I gained from this programme have been instrumental in my success. The lessons I learned in the programme also helped me to gain a deeper understanding of ESG issues around the world.

Today, through our efforts with Mobiva, we stand at the forefront of the battle against climate change. Our collaboration with UNICEF Malaysia exemplifies this commitment, making meaningful contributions to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, our project aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

One standout feature of the Workshop Into Centre (WITC) elective I enrolled in was the negotiation module led by Malcolm Smith. Even today, I find myself revisiting the materials from this course as it continues to guide my decision-making in the complex world of global business. The skills I acquired in negotiation have proven invaluable, enabling me to navigate intricate international deals with confidence and finesse.

The Manchester Method, which emphasises collaborative learning and diverse perspectives, was another game-changer for me. It helped me bridge the gap between my technical expertise and the essential business acumen required to thrive in today’s competitive landscape. Working with peers from various backgrounds, the experience gave us the opportunity to learn from the experiences and insights of various classmates as we explored how to apply the method within our own lines of business, echoing the spirit of learning by doing. This diversity within the cohort allowed me to apply the Manchester Method in unique and impactful ways to my ventures.

The programme’s leadership and HR modules further equipped me with problem-solving skills grounded in critical thinking and cultural understanding. These modules have proven indispensable in addressing challenges that arise when leading diverse teams and operating in multiple international markets. Understanding local cultures through the HR module has been particularly beneficial in building strong relationships with partners and clients worldwide.

To aspiring entrepreneurs considering the Manchester Global MBA journey, this programme is a springboard for establishing a solid foundation in global business. It equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to overcome the challenges of entrepreneurship in today’s interconnected world. The leadership and HR modules, in particular, will empower you to apply critical thinking and cultural understanding to solve real-world business problems effectively.

The Manchester Global MBA programme has been a transformative experience, enhancing my ability to navigate the complexities of international trade and entrepreneurship. I highly recommend this programme to individuals aiming to establish a robust groundwork for effectively navigating the complexities of global business, and overcoming the ever-evolving demands of our dynamic business landscape.
