Daniel Shuttleworth, Managing Director at Greensill and MBA alumnus, has been appointed to the Alliance Manchester Business School Advisory Board.
Daniel, who graduated from Alliance MBS with his MBA in 2018, said it was a “pleasure and privilege” to join the Board. “I am very passionate about Manchester, the city region and the Business School, and am really looking forward to taking up the role.”
In his current job Daniel leads strategic initiatives within Greensill, a leading fintech providing working capital finance to businesses and individuals all over the world. Daniel was previously Global Head of Portfolio Integration with the firm which he joined in 2017. In the last few years he has witnessed huge growth at the business which in 2019 extended $143bn of financing to more than 10 million customers and suppliers, and which today employs more than 1,100 staff, including more than 350 in the North West of England.
Career
Daniel started his career creating software in Japan, and prior to Greensill worked in financial services across the world for leading firms such as Citibank, UBS and ICAP. Throughout his career he has been at the cutting-edge of the emerging fintech industry. “I’ve always been excited about the intersection of finance, tech and data, and about its huge potential to transform and disrupt business practices and financial services on a global scale.”

Global connections
A native of Manchester, Daniel was brought up in Canada and took his first degree at Queen’s University, Kingston, before moving to Japan where he received a Master’s at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.
He added: “I am really looking forward to further building on the exciting and emerging fintech industry in Manchester and the UK, while also leveraging my international connections and experience to help AMBS maintain momentum at the forefront of the fintech revolution. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
Fintech and the University of Manchester
Greensill was founded a decade ago by Lex Greensill, also an MBA alumnus at AMBS. In 2019 the firm made a donation to the University of Manchester to boost the region’s capacity and capability in fintech.
The donation has enabled the University to drive the fintech agenda in the North West with the appointment of Professor Markos Zachariadis from AMBS as a new Chair in Fintech, as well as other key academic posts and PhD scholarships. It has also helped the University promote multidisciplinary research and support student entrepreneurship in fintech and related fields.
Daniel was first introduced to Lex while studying for his MBA at AMBS. “Lex had come to do a talk as part of the MBA speaker series, and I asked an impertinent question whilst chatting to him in a break-out session after the lecture and it went from there. In more ways than one the MBA at AMBS opened a lot of doors for me.”
